Ceiling Spots

Cause: Leaks in the roof (check roof for damaged shingles). Check eves for water backing up from ice dams, check rafters for leaks that "travel" away from original source, check chimney and vents for cracks in flashing, and check attic and crawl space for leaks in the deck.
Damaged Flashing

Cause: Improper installation (new roof) or drying and cracking (old roof). This can sometimes be repaired without replacing roof.
Missing Shingles

Cause: Improper fastening or exposure to high winds. Shingles can usually be replaced individually.
Buckling & Curling

Cause: Improperly applied felt (buckling), movement in deck (buckling), or under saturation of asphalt felt (curling).
Blistering

Cause: Application over wet deck, moisture in shingles, or inadequate ventilation.
Fungus Growth

Cause: Growth of airborne fungi/algae on roof. This is an appearance problem that typically does not affect the service life of the roofing material.
Missing Granules

Cause: Normally a certain number of granules will be loose, especially after application. On aging shingles it indicates a need for replacement.
Rotting

Cause: Absorption of moisture by mat. This is a common problem with organic-based shingles.
